$3.2 Billion
investmenttool.com technology journal
Information Week estimates that over $3.2 billion in computers and related hardware were destroyed in the World Trade Center and nearby damaged buildings. This is a potential stimulus to the profits of large technology firms.
There were 5,000 high end, expensive unix servers destroyed on September 11. There were hundreds of miles of network cables and routers connecting 34,000 personal computers at ground zero.
What this means to technology is not simple. Every one of those devices was insured and replacements have been ordered. All over the New York area there are pallets, filled with Dell, Compaq and Hewlett Packard computers being used to set up new office space. This could mean a short term increase in profits for computers makers.
Why I'm not certain?
Because I don't know how many orders were cancelled in response to the attack. How many consumers decided not to purchase computers is simply not something that I have any idea about.
I do know this. I am doing budgetary research concerning my employers HP-9000 class servers. Due to the recession, HP was offering steep discounts of up to 45% on certain mid range servers. That sale was terminated on October 1. Call it war profiteering or anything you like. Right now, its very hard to get your hands on an HP-9000 server. Maybe that means something.
