Unpatriotic Institutions
investmenttool.com Opinion
In 1969 a Libyan airliner was hijacked and pointed toward Tel Aviv Israel. The hijackers stated their intent was to use the aircraft as a missile and kill as many Jews as possible. The Israeli Air Force shot the aircraft down over the Mediterranean Sea. In 1984 a Pan-Am 747 was hijacked with the intent to blow it up over Tel Aviv. The hijackers were thwarted partially by the pilots. In 1994 Air France Flight 8969 was hijacked in Christmas Eve with the intent to use the aircraft to bring down the Eiffel Tower. The hijackers were killed because they could not fly the plane. So why wasn't the Department of Defense ready for September 11, 2001?
On September 11, 2001 stunned generals at the Pentagon made the following statement. "We never conceived of a commercial airliner as a weapon of mass destruction." The question is why not? There was adequate precedence to believe an attack just like the September 11, 2001 attack was possible. Yet the military and the Trillions of dollars spent on it were not ready. This money and effort was wasted.
The Pentagon, for all its talk of modernization our military as been concerned with the tanks, planes and ships of the second world war, long since past. While the highly paid military chief worried about rogue states with missiles in some theoretical attack while Ossama Bin Laden spent $500,000 and killed over 7,000 Americans. Something is wrong here and at an appropriate time someone needs to be held accountable.
The U.S. military is going to adapt and fight the war on terrorism. Further, though it will be hard and hundreds if not thousands of Americans will die in this war, I am certain it will be successful.
The bottom line here is simple. I do not blame President Bush for this failure. This failure belongs to the prior three administrations and our military. They should have been ready for the threat. There should have been combat air patrol ready to react to any hijacking. It certainly does not take a brain surgeon to figure out that this attack was going to come. What the results show is that we were painfully unprepared. Mr. Bush's actions since the attack are closing the barn door after the horse has escaped.
There is another situation that needs some attention. The Dichotomy within the Bush administration terrorism policy begs to be pointed out. That's why a copy of this column is being forwarded to the white house.
The Bush team has refused to negotiate with Afghanistan over Ossama Bin Laden. They have said simply that the terrorist and all his compatriots must be arrested and turned over to the United States. The evidence is clear who the guilty is.
Yet the same Bush team has been putting enormous pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to negotiate a cease fire with Yasser Arafat. During the past week an "agreement" was reached. It was celebrated by the Palestinian's by riots, bombing and shooting attacks that have led to the death of 14 people.
The United States of America has NSA intercept recording showing an association between Yasser Arafat and the 1993 bombers of the World Trade Center. Israel has the same information but has been threatened with a cut off of weapons and aide if they release the information.
The bottom line here is that Yasser Arafat is a terrorist himself. He harbors terrorists that are responsible for the death of hundreds of innocent civilians in Israel. He sends his peoples children into the street to cover snipers and then cries at the televised funerals for these children.
My wife summarized the situation very well today. If Israel is expected to negotiate with Arafat and his merry men why shouldn't the U.S. negotiate a cease fire with Bin Laden? If it is ridiculous for the U.S. to negotiate, so it should be for Israel. A terrorist is a terrorist. A murder is a murder.
Is the Bush Administration differentiating between the victims? Is a Jew in Jerusalem less worthy of retaliation than a businessman in lower Manhattan?
