Who benefits
investmenttool.com technology journal
It is sickening to thing there will be winners and losers from the tragedy our country has faced. As investors, we need to understand that in the field of technology there are matters to consider.
Dell Computer: I own shares in this company, battered back to its 52 week low. I was heartened to see stacks of new Dell Computers purchased for companies relocating from the Trade Towers, all over Manhattan. Though much to early to see if the orders will outnumber those lost by an economic slump, it seems Dell will have more happy customers since it busted hump as it were to get those computers where they needed to be. I loved the picture on yahoo of a tired shipping guy lounging on a stack of Dell Computers taller than him.
IBM: IBM has a lot of disaster recovery contracts in operation now. Though the labor is probably included, the new hardware is going to get paid for. IBM reports several customers showed up with backup tapes in hand, looking for temporary systems and office space. Looks like a short term win for IBM. Over the long haul, some of this new business will never leave IBM.
Hewlett-Packard: HP set up a special response center to meet the needs of their existing customers. Word from HP insiders is that a few new contracts got inked the past few weeks. Lots of HP computers and high margin HP-9000 servers are rolling into production in New York. Once again, HP's customer service is going to pay off in the long haul.
The moral of the story is simple. There will be a short term hit due to economic uncertainty. All three of these companies and many more have gained customers by going the extra mile these past two weeks. Certainly when the economy recovers, these companies will come out ahead.
