Oracle 9i Internet Application Server:It works!
investmenttool.com technology journal
Oracle Internet Application Server is now functional at my day job. This is good news both because I get to keep paying my mortgage and because this product is the one the future of my organizations business has been bet on.
When we last left our heroes, they had finally had a useful support call and gotten some understanding of what the problem may be. No, it was not a good idea to set a the runtime environment prior to starting the server. Yes, it was probably a good idea to make sure important variables be set at the time you start the server.
Most interesting is that if your database connectivity isn't just perfect, the whole thing just doesn't work.
So no, we can design and test a form or report using Oracle's report tools, compile it on the unix server and then run it from a browser. Most of the features work exactly alike in the client server world as they do on the browser.
The best feature of this product suite is you don't have to install any additional software on your workstation to use the application. Most every business computer in the U.S. has a web browser, and that's all you need to run an application designed for this infrastructure.
I'm going to let this little battle go for a while. It is time to bask in the glory of a success and not worry about the products minor features which have yet to be configured. Bit by bit, piece by piece this technology is working. It was way too hard and the support was very spotty, but IAS seems to be a product that works.
